In the forthcoming weeks I will little by little convert content from the old website to roland-arranger.com. Notice that all content from the old website will not necessarily be converted. I will review each content item before converting. You can see this as a kind of quality ensurance process, which will eventually provide us with a new website with content of high quality and high relevance.

In this thread you can follow the conversion process from day to day.

  • I have now worked intensively with the forum CSS files to get some nice colors, backgrounds etc. This is really difficult for someone like me to do such a job!!! Shocked Angry Smiley But now I am satisfied with the result. Hope you are too Wink
  • A "Miscellaneous sources" submenu item has been added to The Demonstration menu item
  • More pro rendition file for download has been created as download articles
  • Solving mailproblems with the webhotel provider
  • Analyzing security issue. It turns out that some of the new 3rd party components used on the new website are conflicting with certain of the webhotel provider's security policies. This is a really big problem! Makes it impossible to make full backups and making it a hard time administrating certain things on the serverside.. Undecided Cry Might lead to some changes in the future... Sad
  • More problems seems to have been hidden under the "download component stone"... Angry It now turns out the users are not always allowed to download the whole file as the download component interrupts the downloading process. I must say that this is pissing me off! I had thoroughly picked out all the new 3rd party software components after examining and analyzing them, and even though I now find that there are heavy weight problems with this vital component... I will cool off for a while and return with a decision about what to do about this. The most likely solution is to turn to another software component... Sad Undecided

After investigating further into the problems about the download component I have decided to stop converting more download files for now. It turnes out that an alternative component is soon going to be released and the specifications look good! Until that component is installed we will have to live with the bugs in the existing component...

The problems with the download component has bothered me - not least because it prevents me from converting the demo files from the old website. I then went to play my G-70 and suddenly I came up with a solution... I just don't use the download component, when it comes to demos Cool

After all that is what I wanted in the first place, but I guess I have been influenced by the fact that most similar websites uses a download component in order to let the users download files.

But we are talking large media files, so I then thought: why not stream the damn thing?! Smiley

I have been working for a couple of hours on how to configuring the system to feature streaming. It is now working, and this feature also supports video streaming Cool

Now there is technical issues preventing the administration to offer streamed video tutorials, which has been requested by some user club members. Wink

I have redesigned the front page. Now the "Latest messages module" is moved down on the page, which makes the module more readable. There are now quick overview modules to latest content just below the main menu. All modules pulls data from specific content categories - yeahh... this website is looking good Wink

Got the video streaming working for large file by using a remote host server.

I have reorganized some of the forum boards and I have created "Solved issues" child boards dedicated questions which have been solved. Doing this will provide a better overview, when the forum boards will contain thousands of topics.

I have written some new articles.

I have modified forum settings to optimze use of the forum.

I have worked with the video files from the OS2 VIP Demo show to upload file 2+3 (of 6) to remote host server and to add these videos to the article as streams.

I have made some minor menu structure changes.

I have made some minor board structure changes in the forum.

I wanted to add some modifications to the forum providing you with some new cool forum features. However, as I was proceeding I realized that the changes that I was making did conflict with that nice smooth looking skin (colors, fonts etc.) that I had created over the latest days Angry

So Now I have to start from scratch creating a new skin for the forum, which will not conflict with these new features that I want to add to the forum. While I am working with the skin you can already see the first new feature, which is separate RSS News Feeds for each forum board. That's pretty cool, right Cheesy Cool

Stay tuned. When I am done creating the new skin I will be adding more nice features to the forum. Below you can see, which new forum feature that I plan to implement. I will have to say (at this point) that I might come to realize - as the work progresses - that some of the features are not implementable after all... but let's see. Now the first (RSS News Feed) feature is there. And let's hope I manage to implement as many as possible from the list below:

Avatar next to name Modification
Lets you show the topic starters' avatars next to their name on the message index.

Award Modification
This will add an award module to the forum. Members can be given awards, which will be displayed in the member profile.

Location and age Modification
Will display a member's Location and Age next to their posts.

Ignore user Modification
Allows users to hide messages (the posts in the topics) from users they chose to ignore. Settings are based per user, every user has an ignore list of his/her own that doesn't affects other users.

Pages to go Modification
It is a simple fix for linking to pages within a topic, makes the board a little less cluttered with long topics.

Search topic Modification
Adds a "Search Topic" field in the display template, so you can search within a topic

RSS Feed icon Modification
Adds an RSS News feed icon on the board index for each forum.

Notice that the modifications above will be done, because I have received input from users who have requested these more advanced features in the forum. And you know that I am listening to what the users request Wink

I am going crazy trying to modify the skin of the default forum template. It looked much better before, but I have now made some adjustments and I don't want to spend more time with this for now Shocked Angry

You will have to live with the looks it has now... However, the template is very readable, so I guess that's good...

Something drove me nuts, because something looked stranged when I tested in MSIE6. In FireFox it looked fine, but in MSIE6 it looked terrible... please tell me, what you see in MSIE. Also tell me, if you use MSIE6 or MSIE7!

Please take a screenshot from the forum and post a message in the forum, so I can see how it looks on your computer! Thanks Wink

Ignore user Modification
Allows users to hide messages (the posts in the topics) from users they chose to ignore. Settings are based per user, every user has an ignore list of his/her own that doesn't affects other users.

This feature has now been implemented! Wink

In any large fora it is sometimes seen that some users do not like input from certain users. Instead of being bothered with some users postings now you can simple ignore postings from such users - cool feature, right? Wink

Additional notes:

  • You can Ignore/Unignore a user by clicking on the link in the "Author info" included with every single post.
  • You can also manage your ignore list by going in your Profile-> Ignore User options
  • You can't ignore yourself.
  • You can ignore anyone else, including guests.
  • Forum management(admins, moderators) can not be ignored
  • In case guests are allowed to post messages then you ignore guests, but this means that you will ignore them all (in your blacklist write guest to ignore them)
  • Guests can't ignore.
  • An Ignore Button is shown next to the member name in a posting

Award Modification
This will add an award module to the forum. Members can be given awards, which will be displayed in the member profile..

This feature has now been implemented! Wink

Additional notes:

  • This mod allows users with the permission to upload images that will serve as awards.
  • These images can be assigned a name as well as from what they were earned (Ex. Contest Winner, Top Poster, Moderator Of The Year, Best Style Producer etc. etc.)
  • The image and the details assigned with the image are stored and can then be assigned to members.
  • The Admin assigns awards from the admin panel.
  • The same image can be assigned to multiple members, which can be preset through membergroups (to help with larger forums)
  • Once assigned, the member can view his/her album, as well as others.
  • They will be able to select their favorite image, as well as see who else has earned that award.
  • Those with the permissions, can edit the image and information assigned to that image, as well as completely delete it.
  • There is an award icon next to the poster name in a posting.

There has furthermore been created an award announcement forum board
