midi pedal #5590
I know - wrong forum - but it's brief.
In theory, If I play keyboard 2 via midi from keyboard 1, can the sustain pedal on keyboard 1 also sustain keyboard 2?
....thanks in advance!

Happily I can now answer my own question!
Sometimes I play bass in a band with my left hand. The BK9 has stereo outs. I insist on maintaining stereo. I insist on a separate bass output - to a bass amp.
Therefore I hook up a second keyboard (which has 4 outs). and transmit on the left hand only and play midi bass on it. (i.e. from the BK-9)
(transmitting and receiving on channel 2.)
I don't want pedal in the left-hand, and I don't want to transmit in the right-hand because I don't want to midi play the second keyboard. I only want to play the BK9. Therefore when I physically PLAY the second keyboard, (which has stereo outs to BK9 audio in) the pedal from the Roland will not sustain the second keyboard because I'm not transmitting.
A third out on the BK9 would be so nice. (and a 4th for the mic haha)

by the way - I don't care what any 'sound man' tells me. Most of my audience is in the middle in front of me and they hear the stereo and it makes a difference.

On the whole, arrangers with separate outs fall into a higher price range than the midline BK-9. The G70 had it, but was in the $3500 range. And one thing that almost all multiple out keyboards do is have no effects (send or insert) on the auxiliary outputs. So if you want to compress the bass or chorus it, you are stuck with using outbound gear.

I also have played LH bass quite a bit, but on the whole, have usually gone for mixing the bass in my full mix. One upside to this is, the band can’t turn the keys down without losing the bass! I record the main mix to ensure that the balance is correct, but I have often struggled to make sure that the band is listening to the keys and don’t step on my parts. Mixing the bass with the keys guarantees they have to!

BTW, you can filter sustain in a MIDI Set, and link up to 8 different Sets to Performances, so on a song by song basis you can fine tune your transmission and reception needs and have the Performance do it all automatically...

OK I'll try it Friday night. I'll play bass strictly on the BK9, using a split/in stereo. and I'll bring along my sub, in case I need to pump up the bass.

Maybe point your sub at the drummer! He’s probably the one who needs to hear it most...

But I’d definitely record yourself against the BK’s drums at home, turn the recording up loud, and check the mix. Once things are going, it’s tough to be sure that it’s spot on. Plus drummers have a habit of laying into it a bit (or a lot!) more as the evening progresses! Make sure you have some headroom on the bass volume slider in case he does, LOL

So, how did it work out for you? I know a separate module, keyboard or outs and a bass amp is the best solution, but that’s a lot to haul around if you aren’t getting a full double scale, LOL
